The Musée du Louvre, usually referred to simply as the Louvre, is the largest art gallery in the world. Located in Paris, France, on the Right Bank of the River Seine, the art collection is housed within the Louvre Palace, a famous Parisian landmark. It first opened as a museum in 1793, and since then, many donations have increased the collection of artwork considerably. Perhaps the most popular exhibit is Leonardo da Vinci’s “Mona Lisa”, although this is only one of almost 400,000 objects housed there. Yet more are on loan from other museums around the world. It is also the most visited art gallery in the world, receiving over 8 million visitors in 2017 alone.

Interest in the Louvre and its collections has increased since the publication of the book “The Da Vinci Code” and release of the subsequent film adaptation, which was set partially in the museum. This is likely to have contributed to the extremely high number of visitors in recent years.

As you might expect, waiting times to get into the Louvre can be long, leading to many people simply rushing around in order to see the most famous exhibits, and not taking the time to appreciate the entire collection, which includes a wide variety of Greek, Roman, Islamic and Egyptian works. However, you can avoid this with a little planning in advance. Purchasing a skip the line ticket allows you to gain entry much more quickly, meaning you can spend more time in the museum itself, rather than waiting in line for what could be several hours.

The Louvre is open every day except Tuesdays, from 9am until 6pm. Late opening, until 9.45pm, is on Wednesdays and Fridays.
