Skip the line tickets The Colosseum of Rome

The Colosseum stands to this day as the iconic building of Ancient Rome. Located at the foot of the Palatine Hill, home to the Roman Forum and the ruined palaces of Rome’s imperial families and senators, the Colosseum is a monument to the power of the old empire. Completed in 80AD by Emperor Titus and named for the ‘colossal’ statue of the emperor Nero which stood nearby, it has seen mock sea battles in its flooded arena, animal hunts and gladiatorial spectacles. Later re-purposed, its stone was used in the building of Rome’s churches and papal palaces. In this time, the Colosseum itself became a quarry, market and even a fortress.

Now crumbling, it’s still possible to climb through the tiered seats, to stand in the arena and even to go down into the catacombs beneath the Colosseum. Once hidden beneath the sand, these are now open to the public on excursions where you can witness the intricate maze of tunnels which used to house wild beasts and ingenious mechanical contraptions.
