What is Rijksmuseum?
If you are going to visit one museum when in Amsterdam, it should be the Rijksmuseum. Established in the 1800’s, and relocated several times, it is the State Museum of the Netherlands. In 1885 the collections were moved to the beautiful, purpose-build building it is housed in today, located on Museumstraat 1, 1071 XX, Amsterdam.
Over 800 years of Dutch history is represented in this wonderful collection including works by Van Gogh, Vermeer, Van Dyck and of course, the world famous “The Night Watch” by Rembrandt which is worth the visit alone. The exhibits are displayed in such a way as to take the viewer on a trip through the ages, from prehistory, to the Golden Age of Dutch Exploration, up through the old masters to modern day treasures; there is an extensive collection of Delftware, ancient archaeological artefacts, prints and sculptures from the far east, as well as more modern items of interest from the world of fashion and contemporary artists.
In addition to all of the displays, the Rijksmuseum also offers a lovely coffee shop and a beautifully landscaped garden which houses some truly inspiring sculptures.
What are Skip Line Tickets for Rijksmuseum?
Due to the fact that it is possibly the most popular museum in Amsterdam, the Rijksmuseum is always extremely busy. We recommend that you buy “skip the line” tickets in advance. These entrance tickets can be purchased online through official websites before you go. When you present them, you can “skip” the ticketing line and go straight to security, normally saving long waiting times.
Rijksmuseum Opening Hours
The Rijksmuseum is open 9am to 5pm Monday through Sunday (the ticketing office closes at 4.30pm) and it is open 365 days of the year.
